We offer free, one-to-one counselling for women and girls who live in the Bradford area. You can self-refer to our counselling service or be referred by other organisations and agencies such as your GP or support worker. Counselling can give you some time and space where you can think, reflect and talk things through. It takes a lot of courage to come for counselling and it’s not always easy to talk about your thoughts and feelings. You don’t have to talk about anything that you are not ready to talk about. Your counsellor will not judge you or tell you what to do. She will help you to try to make sense of what has happened to you and to recognise what you need to move forward. We have a counselling service by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) counsellors for BAME women and young women. Jyoti counsellors speak Punjabi, Urdu and Mir Puri. We always use interpreters when need so you can use the service whatever language you speak.

The Jyoti service is a specialist service for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic women and girls, which is run by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic women. Jyoti offers a culturally sensitive approach to dealing with issues around rape & sexual violence. The fear of how we will be perceived within our family, community and culture often means that these issues are dismissed, kept secret or never acknowledged. Shame and family honour prevent many women from speaking about their experiences. Our workers also understand how racism can impact on women’s lives, and make it harder for us to find the support we need. The Jyoti service is a safe place where you can come and talk about the difficulties you face at the moment, or the abuse you experienced in the past. Confidentiality is of the upmost importance. We offer services in a range of languages and are able to access a confidential interpreting service. All our counsellors and interpreters are BAME women. We run a specialist Jyoti helpline, so you know your call will be answered by a BAME woman. We offer one-to-one counselling, which gives you a safe, non-judgemental space to be heard by a specialist counsellor who can help you explore the impacts of sexual violence. Through regular face-to-face sessions, the Jyoti service hopes you will be able to shed the shame, find positive ways of coping, and recover and heal. We also run a support group which enables women to come together, to share their experiences and their own ways of coping, and to support each other.

We run therapy groups for 14 – 18 year olds who want to be with other girls and young women who have been through similar experiences. We meet in term time after school. Girls and young women can have a difficult time at home, or lose their friends and be bullied after experiencing sexual violence. The opportunity to be with other girls of a similar age who may understand some of what you have been through is really important to the girls who come. To begin with, most girls are very worried about coming to a group, but once they come, they feel pleased to be there and look forward to it every week. We talk and think together about: How to keep safe. Feelings that can be really difficult. How to manage when things are hard. The girls are very good at keeping confidentiality about what is said in the group. They are also fantastic at looking after each other when things are tough at home or at school. The girls say the group is safe and that they can say what they really feel. They know the workers will listen, believe and respect them. We provide taxis so girls can get to the groups and home safely. We also provide some snacks and drinks in each session. We can take referrals from the girls themselves, their families, schools, social care, Victim Support or other organisations or agencies.

Mindfulness courses for female survivors of sexual violence and abuse Mindfulness is a way of being in the present moment, a way of being aware of our thoughts and feelings with acceptance and kindness. Mindfulness helps us to recognise our negative patterns of thinking, and to realise that we can let them go. When we criticise and judge ourselves we make our lives much harder, mindfulness gives us a way of making friends with ourselves. Research has shown that practicing mindfulness has huge benefits for both our mental and physical health. The course we run uses the insights from this research, and covers practical techniques to reduce our stress levels and increase our well-being. It has eight weekly sessions in which: We learn formal practices to develop mindfulness – these are meditations where we learn to focus our attention on specific things such as our breathing, or our whole body or on developing kindness. We learn some ‘mindfulness in action’ practices which are little things we can do in everyday life to help us let go of stress. We also cover information to help us understand how our minds work, so we can have more control and choice about what we do.

Ill-served by inefficient, out-dated communication, over 600,000 NHS professionals are currently using consumer messaging services like WhatsApp to supplement communication. But the arrival of GDPR regulations in May 2018 rendered healthcare institutions whose employees use these consumer tools to handle patient identifiable data liable for fines of up to 4% of their annual turnover. Hospify is a GDPR and NHS IG-compliant messaging service designed to remove this liability both in the UK and in Europe. Available for free in the Apple and Android app stores, Hospify puts a simple, affordable solution directly into the hands of healthcare professionals and patients. In short, Hospify is a compliant, trusted healthcare messaging app that anyone can use. The free version of Hospify is available right now and in active use in more than 60 hospitals across the UK. Hospify is also backed by Innovate UK, Wayra Velocity Health (in partnership with Telefonica and MSD), and the UNISON and Managers in Partnership healthcare unions. A premium version of Hospify specifically designed for healthcare teams is also now available.
